Audio Mastering

What is Audio Mastering all about?

  • There are many processes involved in mixing and most artists are familiar with them after recording, but audio mastering is the FINAL STEP in making your recording ‘sound like a record’. Nothing further happens to the record before it’s pressed for distribution.
  • Mastering should be carried out on a separate day from mixing, after listening to your mixes on many different systems at home, in the car and/or on headphones.
  • A properly mastered recording will greatly improve songs, not only by maximizing volume consistently across an album but by smoothing out sonic irregularities, improving ambiance and providing a ‘feel’ to the work.
  • Subtle frequency EQ is often employed to clean up a clogged low end, add sparkle to the highs, or reduce piercing unwanted frequencies. Performance editing and reduction in ‘that digital sound’ can also be employed.
  • Mastering can be the difference between your project just sounding like a demo and a ‘professional release record’.  So if you want to sound like your peers, then you quite simply do need it.  If you want to sound better than your peers, then you absolutely definitively need it!!

Why Use a Professional Mastering Studio?

  • Your finished mix is a complex balance of many sounds that can be made worse as easily as it can be improved but a lot can be done to improve the mix. It’s worth using the best equipment available and its worth doing it all on a new day with a fresh insight.
  • If you want the disk to compete on the radio airwaves, be played in-store and the homes of consumers everywhere (now accustomed to excellent sounding music), it has to be sonically right at source).
  • Often the mixes were recorded at different times of day, over a week or more and you can end up with differences in overall level and tone. By the time the mixes are finished, everyone involved is tired (often bored -yes really!) and their ears (minds/sanity) are fried from hearing the same track all day. Mastering creates a seamless, completely presented sound out, of the differing detail of the varied tracks.
  • BB Studio has a comprehensive selection of ultra-clean processors that are built to handle stereo signals from the market leaders. As a concluding & cute example: it is one thing to pass a guitar through a compressor & equalizer, and quite another thing to run your whole mix through state-of-the-art mastering technology.
