Roger Greasby of Coventry's Born in a Barn Studio has won the R and R World ‘Flying to the Ground' remix competition which he entered in December '09 by getting the people of Coventry to vote for him.
Oswald, the band Roger did the Remix for, are a Scottish Indie band from Glasgow now living in London and they have been involved in the launching of a brand new multi media website called www.randrworld.com.
Oswald’s approachability and the fact they make music slightly removed from the semester template, has led newly formed R and R Music, spearheaded by former EMI boss Eric Nicole, to sign the band up as a flagship act.
“After entering the competition to find the best remix of their track the band send what are called stems of their previously recorded track to entrants and its up to entrants to do whatever they like to the recordings.
Roger decided that since the band was essentially a rock band, he should keep the integrity of the song close to their roots in rock, not go for a dance remix. With this in mind Roger mapped out the song at the studio and decided to discard the bass line sound but still use its line and rewrite it on piano then change the sounds on the keyboard.
After this he wanted to mash up the guitar parts so played about with them and chopped them up a bit.
The drums and guitar solo had been omitted from the stems so Roger played his own solo on piano then added strings to build it to the end.
As drums are Roger’s passion several different beats were added but kept discrete not using classic samples but programming them himself from stock sounds and keeping it simple but punchy.
The vocals Roger felt should be left relatively untreated so just added a slight effect in parts but tweaked them where necessary.
Then came the hard bit - getting some votes and that’s where social networking came into its own to raise interest and get votes - so ultimately it was in the hands of the public and if people liked it they would vote. The public liked it.
Roger’s remix remained top of the voting every day bar 1 and finished top when voting finished. Then it was in the hands of the bands A&R team to judge the winner from the Top 3. After submitting the original to them they picked Roger as a clear favorite.
Oswald release their own remix of Flying to the Ground in February and Roger’s remix is promoted alongside.
